Hemet, Riverside County
Hemet exists because of a dam. Lake Hemet Dam, finished in 1895 in the mountains above the valley, sent irrigation water to new farms, and the town incorporated in 1910. Since 1923 residents have staged the Ramona Pageant each spring in a natural amphitheater in the hills, an outdoor play with a cast of hundreds drawn largely from the community.
